Mountain Home is dominated by water. The lakes, Norfork to the East and Bull Shoals to the West, and the 3 rivers, the Norfork, the White and the Buffalo have always been a huge source of income and enjoyment for the area. Living "on the lake" here typically means owning a home that joins the "government strip" a winding strip of land created by the Corp of Engineers and varying in width, that borders these lakes. Some homes are what has been called "walk to water." Although it could be a difficult walk even for a person in good physical condtion. Other properties sit high above the lake and offer fantastic views. The "government strip" is protected land and as such this vast acreage is set aside as wildlife habitat and as a form of shelter belt protecting our lakes from the activities of people that could potentially endanger this amazing natural resource that we have. Having these protected lake shores gives us wonderful clear lake water, wave swept rocky beaches and sheltered brushy coves where fish find shelter and can grow to huge sizes. You will find yourself enjoying the privacy of these coves...with not a home in sight. It's what has been drawing people here from all over the country for many years. But with protected lands come rules. You can't cut down the trees on this government land to improve your view. No, you can't build a road to the waters edge. No 4-wheeling either. At first impression this may seem like a negative thing. It's not. Future generations will be able to enjoy watching the deer come to drink on a misty morning, and hear the raccoons chirping in the woodlands just like you can today. Septic systems are set back from the waters edge and are less likely to leach nutrients into the water that would turn it a less than lovely shade of green! The woodlands catch and filter rainwater and help to preserve the water clarity and nearly elimate the erosion and silting problems that many lakes are burdoned with. If you are looking for a home on the water, on either lake, there are just a few. They are as you would expect, some of our highest end properties. If you are interested in more information about them let me know and I will send them to you. And if you have any questions, just call or email. I will do my best to get the information you need. |
