When you are ready to start looking at property, first make an appointment with several lenders and interview them to find out which offers the best rates and loan products for your needs. Find a loan officer that you feel comfortable with. 

Your lender will "pre-approve" you for a loan ammount based on your income, credit history, and current debt.

It will save you a lot of time and aggrivation doing this on the front end instead of after you find the "perfect" home, only to be disappointed when you can't qualify for the loan!
